The other day, a good friend of mine sold some of his art at an exhibit. He’s really good, but for years, only his closest friends got to experience his pieces. They were all over his home, and generally, nowhere else.
Well, not only does it take confidence to showcase your creativity in front of strangers, which he did! It requires dedication, commitment, and sacrifice to create something worth showing to begin with, which he did!
When he’s locked in on his work, he has a saying that keeps him grounded and focused on the more important tasks at hand; whatever they be.
So, to celebrate him today, I’m releasing a poem I wrote in my twenties centered around his axiom: “bills before thrills”. Enjoy, and congrats Nero!
i should order sushi topped with caviar and eels!
livin’ large, breakin’ bread, over extravagant meals?
but before i got too high on the hog, to eat what’s been killed...
I remembered what the homie told me: “Bills Before Thrills”
i should hit the town tonight to get high in the hills!
drankin’ good, smokin’ tough, poppin’ ass and pills?
but before i set the play up, and spend it all on frills...
I remembered what the homie told me: “Bills Before Thrills”
i should lay this parlay down, i hope my team kills.
checkin’ odds, bettin’ ball, do you know how that feels?
but before i checked those lines and made that risky ass deal...
I remembered what the homie told me: “Bills Before Thrills”
i should trick out my ride, and give the whole town the chills.
candy-coated, speaker knockin’, on two pairs of wheels?
but before i tried to turn my life into an instagram reel...
